The Brackens
Your turn begins at The Brackens.
roll two dice for what you encounter while journeying through the brackens:
2 = Strolling amid the spiny brackens, you meet a very sneaky talking porcupine. Roll a die, unless you have a spiny spy. If the die roll is equal to or less than your Craft, gain a spiny spy. A spiny spy is an Ally. If you have the spiny spy and you receive a Wound due to a Melee Combat, you may choose to roll a die. If the die roll is 1, 2, or 3, lose the spiny spy, then you do not receive the Wound. If the die roll is 4, 5, or 6, lose the spiny spy, then you do not receive the Wound, and the monster in the Melee Combat with you receives 1 Wound.
3 = A shaman of the brackens teaches you a simple spell. Roll a die. If the die roll is less than or equal to your Vitae, gain prickers. Prickers is a Spell. You may use prickers at the start of any Melee Combat. If you receive a Wound due to a Melee Combat that prickers was used at the start of, roll a die. If the die roll is 4, 5, or 6, the monster in that Melee Combat with you receives 1 Wound. You may not use more than 1 prickers per Combat.
4 = A large horny toad with a hide of sticky thorns hops onto the path in front of you. Fight a Melee Combat with a thorny toad. The thorny toad's attributes are Arms: 4, Magic: 2, Craft: 2, Vitae: 3. If you receive a Wound due to a Melee Combat with the thorny toad, roll a die. If the die roll is 1 or 2, receive 1 additional Wound.
5 = The brackens is home to a wild tortoise that has developed it's own thorny shell. Fight a Melee Combat with a thorntoise. The thorntoise's attributes are Arms: 3, Magic: 2, Craft: 2, Vitae: 2. If the thorntoise receives a Wound due to a Melee Combat with you, roll a die. If the die roll is 1, 2, or 3, receive 1 Wound.
6 = A sentient tumbleweed made of sharp thistles comes rolling your way. Fight a Melee Combat with a thistleweed. The thistleweed's attributes are Arms: 2, Magic: 1, Craft: 1, Vitae: 1. Roll a die at the start of a Melee Combat with the thistleweed. If the die roll is 1 or 2, receive 1 Wound.
7 = As the name implies, there are numerous thorny brackens throughout this area. Roll a die. If the die roll is greater than your Arms, receive 1 Wound.
8 = A magical bird made of brackens comes swooping down on you. Fight a Melee Combat with a thorn bird. The thorn bird's attributes are Arms: 2, Magic: 1, Craft: 1, Vitae: 2. Roll a die at the start of a Melee Combat with the thorn bird. If the die roll is 1, receive 1 Wound.
9 = A mage surrounded in a whirling cloud of bracken needles approaches you menacingly. Fight a Melee Combat with a needle mage. The needle mage's attributes are Arms: 3, Magic: 3, Craft: 2, Vitae: 3. If the needle mage receives a Wound due to a Melee Combat with you, roll a die. If the die roll is 1 or 2, receive 1 Wound.
10 = A small dragon made out of magical brackens breathes thorny needles at it's foes. Fight a Melee Combat with a bracken dragon. The bracken dragon's attributes are Arms: 4, Magic: 3, Craft: 2, Vitae: 2. If you receive a Wound due to a Melee Combat with the bracken dragon, roll a die. If the die roll is 1, 2, or 3, receive 1 additional Wound.
11 = Blossoming on top of a cactus is a rare pink flower. If you choose, roll a die. If the die roll is greater than your Craft, receive 1 Wound. If the die roll is less than or equal to your Craft, gain a cactus flower. A cactus flower is an Item. If you have the cactus flower at the start of a turn on a page with the word 'Wildlands', 'Cairns', 'Crags', 'Barrows', 'Barrens', 'Brackens', or 'Briars' in it's name, and you have 1 or more Wounds, you may choose to lose the cactus flower. If so, roll a die. If the die roll is 1, 2, or 3, heal 1 Wound. If the die roll is 4 or 5, heal 2 Wounds. If the die roll is 6, heal 3 Wounds.
12 = A desert warrior brandishing a bracken buckler and wielding a needle sword rules this region. Fight a Melee Combat with cactus jack. Cactus jack's attributes are Arms: 6, Magic: 3, Craft: 3, Vitae: 4. If cactus jack receives a Wound due to Melee Combat with you, roll two dice. If the die roll is 9 or more, cactus jack does not receive the Wound, then roll a die. If the die roll is equal to or greater than your Arms, receive 1 Wound. If cactus jack has fallen due to Combat with you, gain a needle shield. A needle shield is an Item. If you have the needle shield, roll two dice when you receive a Wound due to a Melee Combat. If the die roll is 9 or more, you do not receive the Wound, then roll a die. If the die roll is greater than the Arms of the monster in that Melee Combat with you, that monster receives 1 Wound. You may not use any other Item with the word 'shield' or 'armor' in it's name if you have the needle shield.
After your brackens encounter ends, you must choose between staying in The Brackens or going back to The Wildlands. If you choose to stay in The Brackens, your turn ends and the next turn will begin in The Brackens; Stay on this page if so. If you choose to go to The Wildlands, your turn ends and the next turn will begin in The Wildlands; Proceed to that page if so.
